The Admissions Process: An Overview

Most parents and students find the college application process to be somewhat daunting. However, there are basic requirements that the vast majority of schools share. When a student is able to exceed the minimum standards that most schools hold, he or she stands a very good chance of receiving an acceptance from that institution.

There are really five primary aspects to the application. These include the SAT or possibly the ACT, the GPA, the personal statement or essay, extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation. Some schools, in particular private colleges, will require additional essays and possibly, letters of recommendation. While the latter may help to differentiate one applicant from another, the five major areas mentioned above are by far the most critical.

Remember that many schools will have numerical cut-offs for the SAT and GPA, which means that they will not even consider those applicants unless they meet those basic criteria. However, once met, the applicant must still work to make himself or herself stand out from the rest of the applicant pool, ideally with higher than average GPA and SAT’s, but also with evidence that he or she has participated in extracurricular activities that have demonstrated positive applicant qualities .
