Frequently Asked Questions

How does New Horizon work?
We work with a client to carefully identify goals and problem areas. We then select a professional tutor who will work well with your student. You and your tutor will develop a schedule, and we will maintain close contact with you in order to ensure that your experience is everything that you require.

What ages and grades do you cover?
We work with students of all ages from K-12. However, we are also happy to work with college and graduate students in most subject areas.

What subjects do you address?
Our tutors are able to work with students in need of assistance in all subjects from English to math. We also help individuals with standardized test preparation. For a more complete list, click here.

Where and when do tutoring sessions take place?
Sessions will take place at your home or at any location designated by you (e.g., public library), and they will occur at times that are most convenient for you.

Who are your tutors?
All of our tutors have a background in either formal teaching or tutoring and a college degree. They have proven experience and have demonstrated an ability to consistently improve student confidence and performance.

What does the tutor cover during a session?
This is determined by the tutor as well as parents and students. Tutors are prepared to handle any potential student needs in the areas of interest. Instructors can focus on homework and laboratory assignments, test preparation, critical concepts in need of clarification, or organizational and note-taking skills. The greatest benefit of working one-on-one is that each session can be individually tailored to the student so that the most pertinent issues can be addressed.

How many sessions are required?
There is no minimum or maximum number of sessions. Some individuals need only one or two sessions in order to master a concept, while others may require course-long assistance. You and your child can determine how to best approach the situation. We can give you recommendations as the need arises, but the decision is yours. You are not committed in any way. There are no upfront testing or start-up fees.

Does my child have to undergo an initial evaluation?
No, most students need assistance in specific areas or subjects. Diagnostic tests have little value in most instances. Our tutors are consistently evaluating your child from session to session. This is the most valuable type of feedback available.

How long do lessons last?
The minimum is one hour, but your sessions can vary in length depending on your needs and scheduling constraints. Session length can also vary from week to week as required.
